Wong Tai Sin Temple is located on the southern side of Lion Rock in the north of Kowloon. It is a Taoist temple, one of the most legendary shrines in Hong Kong. It is also known as Sik Sik Yuen. This temple was established in the year 1921, popular among overseas Chinese in Southern Asia, Europe and America. It is the temple of Wong Tai Sin, the Great Immortal Wong. It is believed that Wong Chuping at the age of 15 started following Taoism. After the sincere devotion he attained enlightenment and became eternal. Since then he is called as Wong Tai Sin. It is a belief that he would punish evils, cures the injured and salvages the dying. His sway spread in the entire city in the early 20th century. He is said to grant every wish if it is sincere and person asking for it truly deserves the same.
Fortune predicted at the various booths/stalls in the temple is always correct. There are few stalls for palm reading as well. Hence many people come here to know their fate. The course of action is – worshipper first lights the worship sticks, goes down on his/her knees before the main idol of Wong Tai Sin, makes a wish and finally shakes a bamboo cylinder having fortune sticks until one falls out. The stick is then exchanged for a piece of paper having the same number. The soothsayer then reads out the fortune mentioned on the paper for the same person.
As such the temple is visited all the year but from January 1 to 15, the temple receives regular worshippers of Wong Tai Sin who come to thank the immortal for answering their prayers and setting them free from their personal tribulations. Also, numerous visitors visit the temple at the time of Wong Tai Sin's birthday that falls on the 23rd day of the 8th lunar month and the Chinese New Year holidays.
The temple is built in the traditional Chinese temple style. The architecture of the entire building is fabulous. It has magnificent red pillars having a glorious golden roof on the top decorated with blue friezes, yellow latticework and brilliant multi-colored carvings. Daxiong-baodian or Grand Hall, Sansheng Hall and the Good Wish Garden are additional features developed within the province of the temple. The temple ground has three memorial archways. The first archway is outside the temple on which the name of the temple is carved beautifully. Second one comes after crossing the stalls of soothsayers and the fortune-tellers and followed by the third memorial archway. Temple also has nine dragons wall same as that of popular Nine Dragon Wall in Beijing and the Good Wish Garden, a miniature copy of Beijing's Summer Palace. These archways and dragon walls are a regular attribute of traditional Chinese architecture. One could also look for the impressive compilation of Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist literature at this temple.
