The Kapaleeswarar temple of Chennai which is an ancient and revered temple of South India is situated in the Mylapore area in Chennai. Fragmentary inscriptions indicate that the temple goes back to 1250 AD but the temple in its current form was rebuilt only in the 16th century by the rulers of Vijayanagara. The ‘gopuram’ or the tower is 37 meters tall and has intricate carvings. This ‘gopuram’ is peculiar to Dravidian architecture and the temple of Kapaleeswarar is a beautiful specimen of classic Dravidian temple architecture and sculpture.
Though this temple is the holy shrine of Lord Shiva, in the courtyard of the temple there is another small shrine under an old Punnai tree which is dedicated to Goddess Parvathi. This shrine shows Goddess Parvathi worshipping Lord Shiva in the disguise of a peacock. In fact, it is from this legend that Mylapore has derived its name- ‘myil’ meaning peacock and ‘oor’ which means town.
The Kapaleeswarar temple of Chennai has some beautiful sculptures among which the bronze idols of 63 Saivite saints decorating the outer courtyard are stunning. These 63 Saivite saints were canonized for reputedly leading lives of penance and prayers and every year, during March-April they are carried by devotees on the eight day of the yearly 10-days Arupathumoovar temple festival in a colorful procession. The temple is supposedly the site of a miracle and this is shown through the medium of sculptures before the temple flag mast.
The Kapaleeswarar temple is not only a place of pilgrimage for Hindus but is also a tourist attraction for its ancient, beautiful sculptures and architecture.
