Chennai, one of the big cities of India, is noted for its Marina Beach – it being the jewel in the crown. It is stated to be the second largest in the globe. Memorials have been set up on the beach commemorating political personages and those who fought for India’s freedom. Apart from the majesty of the Indian Ocean the other beach attractions are the Aquarium, the Light House, the Boulevard of Walks and many other driveways and gardens that make the beach awesome. Another popular spot is Eliot Beach together with Cove Long Beach that has a fort, a mosque as well as a church.
The British too have left their stamp on Chennai with many cathedrals and structures. One such reminder of colonial days is Fort St. George. It is from here – Clive’s Corner that the founder of the British rule, Robert Clive laid the foundations of building the empire. The fort continues to remain today as one of the best pieces of British military architecture in India. George Town has developed from Fort St. George. It is the commercial hub of Chennai throbbing with activity from sunrise to well after sunset. The second lighthouse adjacent to the High Court is reminiscent of the maritime past of Chennai. One of the oldest municipal buildings in India is the Corporation Complex otherwise known as Ripon Building.
Chennai is noted for its temples and spiritual abodes. Temples and churches raise their heads next to each other. The Parthsarthy Temple dates back to the 8th century and was built by the Pallava rulers. The gopuram or arched gateway is majestic as is its architecture. The Kapaleeshwar Temple dates back to the 13th century and focuses on the architectural achievements of the Dravidians. The Santhome Cathedral was constructed on the tomb of St. Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. It is a pilgrim centre of repute.
There are many other sites to see in Chennai. There is the Government Museum on Pantheon Road. – It being one of the best in the country looking back into history. Some of the best old painting collections are kept in the National Art Gallery. A globally famous classical music and dance centre is Kalakshetra founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale. Nearby is Cholamandalam – a cooperative set up by artists famous for its open air theatre and theme of modern art. In Guindy National Park is located the Snake Park bang in the centre of the Raj Bhavan. One can view an impressive collection of snakes and reptiles. Not to be missed out is the Theosophical Society founded in 1882 by Madam Blavatsky and Colonel Olcott. It sits amidst verdant green gardens doted with many shrines belonging to various faiths.

Many trips originate from Chennai taking tourists on a temple tour. It starts from the seaside village of Mamallapuram. Another place of halt is Kanchipuram throbbing with vibrations of an ancient past. Moving southwards following the coastline is Pondicherry – the location of Auroville that is playing a vibrant role in the New Age. The temple trail goes further south to Chidambaram. Thanjavur is a commercial hub not to be missed for it being the birthplace of the classical Bharatnatyam dance. Another noted city is Tiruchirapalli – it being a commercial centre. Nearby is the temple complex of Srirangam – one of the largest in India. Rameshwaram rests on the long finger of land that point southwards towards Sri Lanka. Together with Kanyakumari the two are sacred pilgrim spots hugging the ocean.
To the west of Tamil Nadu are the hill stations of Kodaikanal and Ooty nestling among verdant hills covered by trails and coffee plantations. At the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary the tourist gets a chance to view elephants, tigers and leopards if luck permits. Closer to Kodaikanal nestling in the Palani hills is the Annamalai Sanctuary famous for being the habitat of lion-tailed macaques – monkeys having black manes. Near Chennai in the wetlands of Vedanthangal and Point Calimere one can see flocks of innumerable migratory birds.
