The third largest city of Tamil Nadu state hugs the River Noyyal close to the Western Ghats. The weather is pleasant and the scenery exotic. The city itself has its own wonders of flora and fauna. In South India it holds a special niche. There are many places of interest in Coimbatore.
VOC Park Amusement Park with a zoo:
The park has been named in honour of freedom fighter V.O. Chidambaram. Maintained by the Coimbatore Corporation, the park is a special haunt for children with many things of interest for the little ones. A huge aquarium has a rich collection of different kinds of fishes and a mini sized zoo. Models of prehistoric dinosaurs are also kept on display. There are swings, slides, seesaws and toy trains together with other playing equipments for the kids.
Agriculture University:
While visiting Coimbatore the Agriculture University, covering 300 hectares, should not be missed out – it being the finest one in South Asia. It is 5 km distant from the railway station located towards the west from the centre of the city. The botanical garden within the university is a popular draw with its many kinds of flowering vegetation and foliage.
Perur Temple:
The small town of Perur noted for the sacred Perur Temple is 6 km distant from Coimbatore. The deity is said to be one of the seven Kongu Sivalayams. The exterior of the temple was constructed by the Karikala Cholan, a 17th century King of Madurai. The inner sanctum is more ancient. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva. The statue of a sepoy or Indian soldier loading a musket is carved at the base of one of the pillars close to the entrance.
The soldier is similar to the ones in the army of Mogul Emperor Aurangzeb. The poetic writings of Arunagiri Nather and Kachiappa Munivar have immortalized the inner meanings of this work of art – the Perur Temple.
Marudhamalai Temple:
About 12 km distant from Coimbatore Railway station is located Marudhamalai Temple standing on a hillock. The presiding deity is Lord Subramanya. Large numbers of devotees throng to the temple because the people believed the god Dandayuthapani had performed many miracles in this place. The two festivals of Thai Poosam and Tirukarthigai are performed here with colourful gusto.
Forest College:
About 3.5 km to the north of Coimbatore Railway Station is the Forest College. It is one of the oldest colleges of its type in India. Visitors should make it a must to visit the museum of the college. It has a priceless collection of various types of rocks, snakes, insects and other fossils of both plants and animals. A special advisory counter of the college is always ready to help interested enquirers with matters relating to plant husbandry business. Forest rangers get their training from this college.
