Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple:
The temple is close to the sea on the eastern face of the island. It is noted for its awesome corridors supported by gigantic carved pillars. The corridor is the longest in the world being 197 metres long from east to west and 133 metres wide from south to north. The tower or gopuram of the temple is 54 metre high. The temple that is viewed today was constructed by various rulers during different historical periods starting from the 12th century. Mani darshan is an important ritual pooja performed early morning each day for about an hour. Mani is a jewel made of a precious stone named sphatik. It is in the form a lingam of Lord Shiva. The lingam was given to the temple by Sage Shankaracharya. Legend goes that this is the mani or the jewel of the divine snake – Seshnag.
Agni Theertham:
The temple of Ramanathaswamy faces eastwards. The beach is nearly 100 metres from the main gate of the temple. The sea is unusually calm here and thus ideal for bathers. The water is thought to be holy and is referred to as agni teertham. Devotees perform pooja and rituals in honour of their departed ancestors by the beach.
Gandamadana Parvatham:
The hillock is located 3 km distant on the highest peak of the island. It is believed that the Lord Rama has left the imprint of his feet (padam) on the chakra or wheel.
Sukreevar Temple:
This temple is another pilgrim spot located en route to Gandamadana Parvatam close to the television centre – Doordarshan Kendra.
Satchi Hanuman Temple:
This temple is thought to be the place where Hanuman gave the glad tidings to Rama that he had found Sita. He came with an evidence or satchi – a chootmani or jewel of Sita. The temple is 3 km distant from the main temple en route to Gandamadana Parvatham.
Badrakaliamman Temple:
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga and is located 2 km distant from the main temple en route to Gandamadana Parvatham.
Five-faced Hanuman Temple:
The temple dedicated to Hanumanji having five faces is located 2 km from the main temple. The image is covered with vermillion or sendooram. The three images of Rama, Sita and Hanuman were brought from Dhanushkodi during the time of dangerous cyclones in 1964 and kept here. Dhanushkodi is the bridge said to be built with floating stones connecting India with Sri Lanka. This temple is a must for the tourist.
Jadayu Tirtham:
In the southern side of Rameshwaram is this holy site. When Ravana abducted Sita, Jadayu, the King of the Birds, fought with the demon but when his wings were slashed he fell down at this place. In memory of the incident this temple has been erected. Nearby is a pond encircled by seven sand dunes. The water of the pond is sweet and tastes like coconut water. It is akin to a desert oasis. Every twelve years Maamangam festival is held at this pilgrim spot.
Nambu Nayagi Amman Temple:
For the residents of Ramnad District this temple is of great significance. It is 8 km distant from the main temple of Rameshwaram en route to Dhanushkodi.
Kodandaramar Temple:
It lies on the way to Dhanushkodi and is 10 km distant from the main temple. According to legend it was here that Sri Rama performed the coronation ceremony of Ravana’s younger brother Vibhishana when the latter ran to Rama seeking shelter and asylum. There are four exquisite images of Rama, his brother Lakshmana, Rama’s wife Sita and Vibhishana.
Dhanushkodi:
This southern tip of the island is known as Dhanushkodi and is 18 km from the main temple.It was completely swallowed by the ocean during the 1964 cyclones. Today visitors can see what remains of the battered town. Sea surfing is popular game for tourists here.
Villoondi Theertham:
This pilgrim spot is 7 km distant from the main temple en route to Pambam. Legend says that when Rama and Sita were airborne in the Pushpak Veeman while returning from Lanka, Sita said she was thirsty. Instantly a spring arose out of the sea. The water was fresh and sweet. Here there are three springs. Nearby is another temple dedicated to Lord Rama – Ekandha Ramar Temple.
Annai Indira Gandhi Road Bridge:
It is also familiar as the Pamban Bridge and is 12 km from the main temple. It links the island of Rameshwaram with the mainland. In India this is the longest bridge running 2.2 km – one of the best illustrations of the Indian architecture and engineering. The bridge has been constructed at a considerable height. The traveller is spellbound with the sea on both sides, the numerous islands and the corresponding rail bridge.
