The ancient name of Tanjore is Thanjavur. It is well connected by all means of transport – rail, road and air. Trichy is the nearest airport and is 65 km distant from the city located to its west.

Sri Bragadeeswarar Temple:
The Sri Bragadeeswarar Temple was built by the greatest of Chola Kings – Rajaraja I during the 10th century AD. It is an outstanding testimony to the brilliance of Chola architecture.
Thanjavur Palace:
Thanjavur Palace is adjacent to the temple. It is a massive structure made of stone and constructed in parts by the Nayaks in 1550 AD and by the Marathas.
Inside the Palace is an Art Gallery containing innumerable statues made of granite and bronze during the Chola era. Another part of the palace contains the Saraswathi Mahal Library where is conserved more than 30,000 palm leaf manuscripts as well as paper ones in Indian as well as European languages. The Palace has an ancient music hall known as the Hall of Music.
Inside the Palace complex is the Royal Museum that has a varied collection comprising of manuscripts, weaponry, wearing apparel, utensils and musical instruments that were used by the Royals of Thanjavur.
Schwartz Church :
Another place to visit is the Schwartz Church constructed in 1779.
A unique piece of magnificence is Tholkappiyar Sadukkam that was erected at the time of the 8th World Tamil Conference.
Mariamman Temple:
One can get a bird’s eye majestic view of Thanjavur Town from the tower of Mariamman Temple of Punnai Nallur that is 6 km distant from Thanjavur. The presiding deity is the goddess Mariamman Naageswaran.
Orattanad:
The Orattanad is Maratha chattram that has been named after Muktambai who was one of the many queens of Sarfoji. The structure looks like a chariot and flaunts a surfeit of mythological figures carved on wood. The most historic monument is Manora constructed by the Tanjore Marathas.
