People coming to Chennai for vacations should not miss out on visiting the Guindy National Park. The Park has unbounded natural beauty, a snake park and a children’s park. It makes for an amazing day outing amidst lush nature and is very popular as a picnic spot also. The Park’s nature trails, footpaths, lakes and ponds offer excellent wildlife viewing. The Guindy national Park is also important in terms of botany as even today a few almost extinct species of plants can be spotted here. It is the true representative of the thorny scrub of the dry zone of the south. An interesting story behind this park is that it used to be the hunting grounds of an Englishman named Gilbert Rodericks and after his demise was purchased by the Government of Madras in 1821. It was declared a National Park in 1910.
Plant Life at the Guindy National Park
Guindy National Park has a variety of plant life. Over 24 types of trees can be found in this park and some of the more important ones are the Atlanta Monoplylla, Amona squamosa, Limonia and the Feronia Azadirachta. Fourteen different types of shrubs are also to be seen here.
Animal Life at the Guindy National Park
The Indian Antelope or the Black Buck which is to be found only in India comprises the main attraction of the Guindy National Park. Besides this, 14 kinds of mammals are to be found like the spotted deer, elephant, toddy cat, jungle cat, antelope etc. a large variety of amphibians and snakes are also to be found in the park.
Bird lovers will rejoice for there are over 37 species of birds in the Guindy national park. The crow pheasant, kingfisher, golden backed woodpecker, blue jay, red wattled lapwing, yellow wattled lapwing, koels, doves, munias, barkets, flycatcher, beak paradise, stone curlew, quails, minivets, shrikes, blue faced malkoha, parakeets, drongas, robins are only some of the birds which can be spotted here.
