Nestled in the dense forests of the Anamalai range of Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, the Indira Gandhi Sanctuary beckons nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers. The sanctuary is both a wildlife reserve (958 sq km) as well as a national park (108 sq km). The closest town to the sanctuary is Pollachi.
Flora and Fauna in Indira Gandhi Sanctuary
The beautiful nature and animal reserve in the Anamalai range of the Western Ghats is covered with thick, evergreen forests and is famous for its evergreen shoals. A wide variety of wild animals can be seen here including some endemic species. Elephant, tiger, gaur, panther, wild boar, wild dog, sloth bear, Lion-tailed macaque, sambar, four-horned antelope, pangolin, chital and the Nilgiri langur are some of the wild beasts who have made the Indira Gandhi sanctuary their home.
Avian Population in Indira Gandhi Sanctuary
Keen bird watchers will have a great time in the sanctuary as a large variety of birds can be spotted here. Black eagle, Tickell’s flower pecker, green pigeon, racquet tailed drongo, black headed oriole, emerald dove, whistling thrush, rufus woodpecker, paradise fly-catcher, great Indian, fairy bluebird and Malabar pied hornbill are some species which have made their habitat here in the Indira Gandhi sanctuary.
When to Visit Indira Gandhi Sanctuary
Though the weather is pleasant throughout the year January to February are good months to visit. It is better to avoid the months from June to August.
How to Reach Indira Gandhi Sanctuary
Air: Coimbatore situated at a distance of about 75 km is the nearest airport.
Rail: The closest railhead is Pollachi which is about 35 km away from the sanctuary.
Road: All major cities and towns in South India are connected to Coimbatore by road.
General Information
Private vehicles are permitted in the park for driving around but a forest department vehicle is advisable for proper sightseeing. Walking is also allowed but you must be accompanied by a guide who is recommended by the park authorities.
