On the south eastern corner of the Nilgiri plateau in Tamil Nadu is the beautiful and picturesque Mukurthi National Park which covers an area of about 80 sq km with an average elevation of 2400m. It is one of the two National Parks in Nilgiri and is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere. Its wide variety of flora and fauna is very much similar to those found in the Himalayas. The terrain is mainly grassland which, at intervals, has numerous compact, isolated and clearly defined montane wet temperate mixed forests with lovely brooks. In local terms, these forests are called ‘sholas’ and they have evergreen trees and savannah woodlands. These evergreen trees are more stunted than those found in the lowland forests. Three rivers, namely, the Billithadahalla, Kundah and Pykara flow through the National Park.
Mukurthi Park has as its main attraction, the Nilgiri Thar or the Hamitragus Hilocrius. Other commonly sighted wild beasts are the jungle cat, jackals, otters, barking deer, sambar and the Nilgiri Marten. The avian population has the woodcock, laughing and whistling thrushes, black eagle and wild pigeon. A large variety of butterflies flit in the Park including the hedge blues, rainbow trout, blue admiral, Indian red admiral, Indian cabbage white and the Indian fritillary which is very similar to the Himalayan butterflies.
The highest peaks of the National Park are Devabatta (2553m) and Mukurthi. The best view of the Nilgiris is also got from here. The Mukurthi dam lying at the foot of the Mukurthi peak is also a tourist attraction. The cool climate and gentle slopes of the Nilgiris offer easy trekking. No entry permits or guides are required for these treks but it is always advisable to inform the District Forest Officer before embarking on a trek and especially if it is a long one.
Facilities inside the Park:
Trekking, camping, fishing are some of the facilities available inside the Park. For trekking, Porthimund, Pykara and Parson’s Valley are good as they have a pleasant climate along with beautiful scenery. The trek from Parson’s Valley to Porthimund, a village nestling deep in the hills, is extremely picturesque. A tent could be pitched here for the night or one could opt for the forest bungalow. From here, one could then proceed to Mukurthi and from there the trek northwards would take you to the Pandiar Hills. After an overnight stay in a tent, proceed to the Pykara Falls which is along the Pykara Lake. The Mukurthi Lake is great for trout fishing but permission must be got from the Director of the Fisheries Department at Udhagai.
