The Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is one of the most prime breeding grounds for water birds in India. Cormorants, herons, storks, grebes are only some of water birds which frequent this place. This sanctuary has been under the protection of the local people for more than 250 years and is only 75 km away from Chennai. The sanctuary gets its name from a nearby village. A huge variety of both residential and migratory birds can be seen here including the spoonbill, Indian moorhen, little grebe, egrets, white ibis, winged stilts and some migratory ducks. The grey pelicans also make an appearance occasionally. November to February is generally considered the best months to visit this bird sanctuary.
Ornithologists spend weeks at the sanctuary to minutely observe the birds at a close distance. With the help of a pair of powerful binoculars, it is possible to spot a snake bird or a cormorant diving under water to eat up fish which is its staple food. And since the cormorant lacks oil glands to water-proof its feathers, it must come up to the shore to dry its feathers.
Bird watchers can have a great time watching the spot-billed grey pelican moving in groups in the water with strong wing strokes to drive the fish to a shallow corner from where it can make the ultimate assault. They can also observe the spoonbill eating frogs and insects with its bill half-open in the muddy waters.
The migratory birds guided by their biological clocks land at Vedanthangal sanctuary immediately after the monsoons with absolute precision and start their breeding process. By the middle of January, the sanctuary is home to almost 40,000 migratory birds.
How to get there: The closest airport is at Chennai and one has to cover a distance of about 100 km on the National Highway 45 which is a well-maintained road. Chinglepet, at a distance of 26 km is the nearest railhead.
When to visit: November to January is the best time to visit.
Where to stay: Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has a hotel, the Hotel Tamil Nadu or accommodation can be got at the Forest Department Rest House. For the hotel, reservations can be made through money order or bank drafts at its Chennai office.
